Privacy policy

Last updated 20 August 2026

The short version: this extension collects nothing, stores nothing about you anywhere but your own browser, and sends nothing to anyone. There is no account, no analytics, and no server that receives your data.

What the extension can see

To do its job the extension needs the web address of the page you are looking at. It compares the hostname of that address — for example www.example.com — against a list of retailers held on your own computer. If there is no match, nothing happens at all: no reminder, no record, no request.

The comparison happens entirely inside your browser. The address of the page you are on is never sent anywhere.

What is stored, and where

Everything below is kept in your browser's own extension storage, on your device only:

Uninstalling the extension deletes all of it. None of it is synced, backed up or transmitted.

Purchases you log

If you press "I made a purchase" on the reminder card, the extension records the date and time, the website you were on, and the retailer's name. That record is kept in your browser and is never sent anywhere.

When you visit your own Shops Away account page, the extension reads the transaction table already displayed there and compares it with what you logged, so it can tell you whether a purchase has shown up. That comparison happens inside your browser. Nothing about your account, your transactions or your purchases leaves your computer, and you can delete any logged purchase from that panel at any time.

Network requests

The extension makes exactly one kind of outbound request: downloading the public retailer list from www.magicwaits.com/shopsaway/list.php, on installation and once a day thereafter. That request is a plain file download. It carries no cookies, no identifiers and no information about you or the sites you visit.

The address includes the extension's own version number, like ?v=2.2.1. That is so we can tell from our own server log roughly how many people are still running an old version — which matters, because a manually installed copy never updates itself. It says nothing about you: no identifier, no account, no record of which sites you visited.

Because that request happens once a day, we use it to count roughly how many people are using the extension. The server records, per day, how many requests arrived and how many were running each version. To work out how many distinct copies checked in, it stores a one-way hash of the IP address, salted with a secret and with that day's date — so it cannot be reversed, cannot be matched to you, and cannot be linked from one day to the next. Those hashes are discarded at the end of each day and only the count is kept. IP addresses themselves are not stored, beyond the ordinary access log every web server keeps.

What is never collected

Browsing historyNot read, not recorded, not transmitted.
Personal informationNo name, email address, or account of any kind.
Payment informationNever accessed. The extension deliberately stays hidden on checkout pages.
CredentialsIt never asks for, sees or stores your Virgin Atlantic login.
AnalyticsNo telemetry, no usage statistics, no third-party scripts.

Why it asks for the permissions it does

Read the sites you visitThe extension must know which site you are on to decide whether to stay silent. This is checked locally and never sent anywhere.
TabsTo notice when the address changes inside a shop that doesn't reload the page. Only the address is read; browsing history is never queried.
StorageTo keep your settings and the retailer list on your device.
AlarmsTo check once a day whether the retailer list has been updated.
www.magicwaits.comTo download that retailer list.

Affiliate tracking

The extension does not create, rewrite, redirect or intercept any affiliate or tracking link. It links to the retailer's official page on Shops Away and stops there. Whether a purchase earns points is decided entirely by Shops Away and their partners.

Children

The extension is not directed at children and collects no information from anyone, of any age.

Changes

If this policy ever changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new date. If a future version were ever to collect anything, that would be stated here plainly and in the store listing before release.
